A skin condition that consists of areas of hyperpigmentation,
atrophy, hypopigmentation and telangiectasias or Spider veins and is known as
Poikiloderma. It is characterized by red colored pigment which occurs more
frequently on the chest or the neck, on the skin affecting mostly in women that
is commonly caused with sun damage exposure.
Causes &
Infection:
Exact cause for Poikiloderma is unknown but factors that
play a vital role in causing a result are accumulated sun exposure,
photosensitising components of cosmetics and toiletries, especially perfumes,
fair skin and hormonal factors. Environmental causes like Photo-aging:
dermatoheliosis, Sulfur mustard-induced poikiloderma, Solar radiation and
Poikiloderma of Civatte.
Early stage of inflammatory with Poikiloderma is identified
with bluish red discoloration and swelling if not treated at the beginning stage
it can lead to glistenning cigarette-paper appearance which would be late
atrophic stage and you can observe occurrence of poikilodermatous
lesions and slowly extend centrifugally. Though these lesions usually are
asymptomatic some of the patients may report with symptoms like mild burning,
itching and hyperesthesia.
Treatment for
poikiloderma of Civatte
As the results of this treatment may be disappointing in
many cases patient should be educated to get awareness by avoiding to sun
exposure and the correct usage of sunscreens due to no specific medical
treatment for this condition. It may include like use of Sun protection
sunscreen lotions with 50+ SPF, Affected area should be completely avoided by
the usage of all perfumes including those in soap, Fading pigmentation
preparations which includes Hydroquinone may also help in reduction of poikiloderma,
The best way to reduce the telangiectasia and pigmentation would be with
treatments like Pulsed dye laser (PDL) and intense pulsed
light (IPL)
